LED Upgrade Spotlight: Schools and the Benefits of LEDs
As schools look for ways to keep students engaged and interested in their studies, many institutions are starting to see the link between their spaces and students’ attitudes and education. It should come as no surprise, but being surrounded by harsh, flickering, buzzing, dingy bulbs with terrible CRI scores isn’t exactly conducive to good concentration.
As schools undergo renovations, whether for safety or just to modernize ageing facilities, many are turning to LEDs for more than just the energy savings they afford. The versatility of LEDs lends itself to endless creativity and options that could never before have been considered for school lighting.
As Founder and President of Health-e Pro, Meg Chesley, discovered: environment affects behavior. She has made it her mission to transform school lunch rooms into inviting, comfortable spaces where students want to be rather than avoid. Chesley employs many tactics, including fun, clean, interesting lighting to achieve her goals. In one school, the lunchroom had become a hotbed of fighting and animosity. The principal was at his wit’s end before hiring Chesley’s firm to redesign the space. After the renovation, not only did the lunch room look different, it was different. Students’ attitudes and behavior changed virtually overnight. The new space brought more students and the animosity and fighting vanished.
The importance of bright, open, and airy spaces can’t really be overstated. The lighting chosen to illuminate those spaces is paramount. You can paint a room, bring in new tables and chairs, redo the floors, clean all the windows, but if you’re still burning the same old dingy low-CRI light source, the space will still feel uncomfortable and all your hard work will be wasted. Conversely, upgrade your lighting to high-quality LED and you’ll see marked and immediate improvements.
The power of environment extends far beyond the lunch room. Clean, bright, inviting spaces make students want to be in school. They make the school feel warmer and safer. It’s easier to focus on school work. Yes, the up-front cost is higher to upgrade all those fixtures, but as we discussed when talking about LED versus fluorescent tube lights, the amount of money schools and school districts will see in energy savings will pay for the upgrades in a matter of months.
If a full lighting renovation isn’t in your school’s current budget, the first step toward better lighting would be simply replacing any incandescent or fluorescent lamps with LED equivalents. One of the most common lights in any school building is the T8 fluorescent tube light. LED equivalent lights provide better light quality, use less energy, and last longer than these old tubes. One of the biggest benefits of these tubes is that some utilize a “ballast bypass,” meaning that in most cases they can be swapped with existing fluorescents without requiring any changes to the ballasts.
These fun, geometric designs would require a larger renovation project to implement, but the bulbs inside them are your standard T8 LED lamps. They provide clean, even, high-quality lighting and, importantly, require very little maintenance. LEDs’ long life expectancy will cut down substantially on the number of times the maintenance crew will need to get out the ladders to change faulty or expired bulbs.
Many schools also use recessed can lights in classrooms, libraries, cafeterias, and other communal spaces.
Task lighting on teachers’ desks or in lamps in reading nooks typically require simple A19 60-watt bulbs.
When considering lighting at your facility, don’t discount the importance of exterior lighting. One way to call attention to your school, make it feel more elegant, and also provide additional security is to consider uplighting with ground-mounted spotlights.
Wall packs are another important consideration in exterior lighting. These are less aesthetically appealing than the uplighting just discussed, but are great for areas of the school that are tucked away, difficult to access, or lend themselves to lots of shadow. Delivery entrances, rear walls, or any other out-of-the-way space that could use extra illumination and security are good places to mount wall packs.
No matter your school’s motto, mission, or mascot, the most important things are your students and their education. Fighting against your facility does you and them no favors. Retrofitting your lighting or completely upgrading to LED will do wonders for your space while saving thousands of dollars in energy costs. Creativity breeds creativity. Keep those spaces interesting and fun and you’ll see your efforts reflected in your students’ abilities, unlocking their full potential.
